    What can you add to the straw bales to stop flies from laying their eggs in it? This drove me crazy last year when I did the straw bale gardening for the first time. I ended up using an insecticide, but then the birds were eating the larvae and one of our resident bluebirds must have eaten one and we found her dead next to the straw bale. I'm wondering if I should add an insecticide when I add the fertilizer.

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom 6 місяців тому

      I never had that problem, and I am not sure what I would do. If you used manure to start the bales, that may have attracted the flies. I used dissolved granular fertilizers and ammonia to start the bales. If I were concerned about it happening again in my bales, I might consider wrapping the bales in garden fabric that permits gas and water through. Holes can be cut to insert the plants. This may prevent the flies from accessing the bales... but probably not 100% effectively. As for insecticides, I would try something organic and animal-safe. Maybe even an oil-based emulsion that might coat insect eggs and larvae and suffocate them, but I would experiment around the roots of one plant first. Those emulsions are typically designed for use on foliage.

      I used Urea fertilizer (46-0-0) to condition (Days 1-3: Water the bales thoroughly and keep them damp. Days 4-6: Sprinkle each bale with ½ cup urea (46-0-0) and water well into bales.) @@TedsFishroom What granular fertilizer do you use and what kind of ammonia? Thank you so much for responding to my question. I appreciate it.

    Thanks for the info! Even 10 years later. Repashy Metronidazole Praziquantel Recipe I used for Infested Goldfish: - 1/3 cup Repashy gel food - 2/3 cups dechlorinated hot (near boiling) water - 3/4 teaspoon Metronidazole - 1/4 teaspoon Praziquantel - 1/2 tablespoon finely minced garlic (from a jar or fresh clove, not sure about garlic powder) OPTIONAL my goldies go nuts if garlic is added for the picky fishy. Measure out dry ingredients and garlic and mix dry in a bowl with whisk. Add water and mix. I pour mine onto a flat surface (baking sheet) with sides. Cut into pieces and store in fridge. Throw away after 14 days to prevent spoilage/mold. I'm not about freezer storage of medicated food. Chime in your thoughts. ***Partly based on Ted's recipe and partly based on API General Cure's ratio between metronidazole and praziquatel ingredients. I bought the medications separately as powders.

    Watching fish is so much more fun than catching them. I really enjoy going to shallow waters and just sit there for hours, looking at the wild fish! Sadly I don’t actually live near any rivers that have fish in them (that aren’t super deep and dark, which means no fish to be seen, even if there are some inside) so this was lots of fun to watch. Thank you!

I'm contemplating a 375gal (72Lx40Dx30H) Custom Lifetime Aquarium with a Seamless Sump Package. I'd like to know if you feel your investment was worth the effort and MONEY, there's nothing inexpensive about this companies products😉. Thanks.

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom Рік тому

      Hello Skipp… That set up is now at a store in Madison, WI. We sold our home in the Summer of 2021 and all the tanks came down. We now move around a few times each year as I pursue a different interest (art and photography), so I do not have any aquariums or vivariums at the moment. Yes, the cost of a CA system is justified, especially if you want a large aquarium with relatively little maintenance. The SS filters were designed for the aquarium leasing industry. The company that owns CA has another division that is the largest leasing/maintenance company in the USA, and the filters (and tanks) have been thoroughly tested in the field. That 250 maintained perfect water quality for many weeks without a water change. The company regularly sets up five and seven week maintenance schedules. I also had a 180 on a more basic SS filter that maintained a Malawi cichlid tank for six months with a friend stopping by once a month of check on the auto feeder and change the filter socks. Not fish losses and the water was perfect and clear when I returned home. The filter needed a deep clean, but was functioning perfectly. I would not hesitate to use the CA system, and if I am ever in a position to have another large tank I will get another.
